“Sleepwalking Through the 20th” is an abstract and surrealist historical soundscape. It takes you through the different turbulences, nightmares, countermovements, hopes, and warnings of the 20th century with the intent to disrupt us from a false sense of security. It challenges us to disengage ourselves from our complicity and neutrality and comfort and privilege during unstable times because, as Audre Lorde so aptly put it, “Your silence will not protect you.” It is an ode to my — and maybe even our collective — past.

For this piece, I researched several public domain audio archives and sampled different sounds, broadcasts, interviews, and speeches from the 1900s to create a pastiche — a post-modern tapestry — of a century drenched in hope, fear, war, and transformation. I regard the 20th century as a phantom limb, another land. I am simultaneously of that century, yet no longer from it: a metamorphosis you, too, may be able to fathom.

With this piece, I speak with a voice I never owned — that of others — but is fully ours. Yours and mine, as it is our shared history. The past is a foreign country. It is the ultimate abstract and surreal poem, and we are all its artifacts, all its ancestors. We are all its foreigners.
